Loamy volcanic soils and areas of rich clay are signatures of the Eastern Highlands where the average elevation is 1500 MASL. It is home to three distinct coffee terroirs: the Asaro region has rich and black volcanic soils; the Ungai region is slightly higher in elevation and has predominantly reddish soils; the Bean region is in a lower part of the valley and has yellow, clay-based soils. The climate in all three sub-regions is best described as cool-tropical, perfect for producing a wide variety of tropical fruits and vegetables.
Farms in the Eastern Highlands vary in size from just a few trees to large blocks of up to 20 hectares. The majority of smallholder farms are run by individual families located within 30 km of the central wet mill so cherries can be processed quickly.
